Weight gained after the age of 18 increases the risk of cancer
Obesity, which is called the plague of the age, is increasing day by day due to wrong eating habits, sedentary life and lack of information. Obesity upsets the balance in the body and causes many serious diseases and cancers. prof. Dr. Alihan Gürkan gave information on obesity and chronic diseases caused by obesity, surgical treatment of obesity and maintaining healthy weight control. dit. Berna Ertuğ talked about the effects of unhealthy diet, obesity and unhealthy weight gain on daily life and health.
Losing 1 kg can prevent 100,000 cases a year
Stating that obesity has a direct effect on the formation of 7% of cancers, Prof. Dr. Alihan Gürkan said, “Controlling excess weight, which is the most important cause of many chronic diseases, is of great importance not only in terms of aesthetics but also in terms of health. “If a person reduces his body mass index by 1% or loses approximately 1 kilogram, 100,000 cancer cases annually in the world can be prevented,” he said.
Stating that obesity is a very serious health problem in Turkey as well as all over the world, Prof. Dr. Gürkan said, “Obesity is not an aesthetic or posture problem, it is a disease. Studies show that obesity will cause 500,000 cancer cases per year in 2030. As in the whole world, it is inevitable for Turkey to get its share from this picture. For this reason, it is necessary to take the necessary measures, both personally and socially, without wasting time.”
Watch out for weight gain with age!
prof. Dr. Gürkan stated that obesity is closely related to some types of cancer, in particular: “Estrogen is a hormone produced in fat cells. The extra amount of estrogen formed in the adipose tissue has a great effect, especially in breast and uterine cancers. Insulin and insulin-like growth factors in the blood of obese people are effective in the increase of cancers. In adult life, from age 18 to age 50, persistent weight gain increases the risk of breast cancer after menopause. The more fat cells a woman has after the age of 18, the higher her estrogen level will be. Studies conducted in the USA have shown that the risk of breast cancer increases by 15% in a group of patients who gain 9-10 kilograms from the age of 18 to the menopause period. The risk increased to 45% when the same patient group was compared with those who gained 22 kg. Losing weight after menopause also reduces the risk of breast cancer. Women who lose 2 to 5 kilos after menopause have a 20% lower risk of breast cancer than those who do not lose weight.
Surgical treatment saves lives
prof. Dr. Gürkan pointed out that bariatric surgery not only improves the aesthetic appearance of the person, but also increases the quality of life. In the USA, where one out of every three people live as overweight, a significant portion of patients with stomach and bowel cancer are obese. Obesity should be treated in the same way that cancer is a disease that is taken seriously and treated. The most effective and permanent method of treatment is surgery. While less success is achieved with diet and exercise, this rate is much higher in surgery. Therefore, it is very important for our obese patients to be treated promptly so that they do not suffer from cardiovascular system diseases, psychological disorders and sleep apnea. According to the Turkey Nutrition and Health Survey conducted by the Ministry of Health in 2010, it was observed that the prevalence of obesity, which was 20.5 percent in men, reached 41 percent in women.
Not all liquid food is innocent!
Memorial Antalya Hospital Nutrition and Diet Specialist Berna Ertuğ stated that if the recommended nutrition program is not followed after sleeve gastrectomy surgery, Memorial Antalya Hospital Nutrition and Diet Specialist Berna Ertuğ said, “The volume of solid foods that patients will consume is restricted with sleeve gastrectomy surgery. The nutrition program starts with liquid foods, but this does not mean that the patient can consume every liquid. Although the patients have undergone sleeve gastrectomy surgery, the absorption of nutrients by the body does not change. Therefore, consumption of liquid foods such as high-calorie, oily and creamy drinks prevents the patient from losing weight. If an excess of calories is made in fluid intake, the patient may stop losing weight and risk gaining weight. After liquid foods, the diet program is continued by adding pureed foods. Permanent weight control is achieved by preparing a continuation program applied by a nutrition and diet specialist, in which the patient can be fed little and often according to his calorie and protein needs.
