Solarium-induced skin cancer cases are higher than smoking-induced lung cancer cases
Cancer is one of the biggest health problems in the world today. We continue to learn new information about cancer types every day. So what do we really know about cancer? Here are 9 unknown facts about cancer;
1. The word cancer comes from the Latin word for “crab”
In ancient times, doctors used the word “cancerous” to compare tumors with vessels or extensions coming out of the main body to crab.
2. Cancer was first depicted in Ancient Egypt
The first known description of cancer was found in the Edwin Smith Papyrus found in 1600 BC. The papyrus described removing a breast cancer tumor with an instrument called a fire drill. Despite this operation, the “no cure” note was written about the disease.
3. More cases of skin cancer caused by solarium than lung cancer caused by smoking
According to recent studies, there are over 419,000 new cases of skin cancer caused by tanning beds in the United States alone each year.
4. More than half of all cancers are preventable
More than half of all cancers and nearly half of all cancer-related deaths are preventable, according to researchers. This means that between 2.4 million and 3.7 million deaths per year could be prevented. It is thought that 80% of cancer deaths in low- and middle-income countries can be prevented.
5. There are over 200 known types and subtypes of cancer
Cancer is not a single disease. In the last 10 years, we learned that there are more than 200 types and subtypes of cancer. With this knowledge, the orientation towards a personalized treatment model began, rather than “one treatment that will suit everyone”.
6. Hairless Mole Mice Are Immune to Cancer
The bodies of these subterranean mammals are rich in hyaluronic acid. This acts like fat in the body, preventing the growth of cancer. This invention may lead to new cancer treatments in the future.
7. There are 28 million cancer survivors worldwide
Especially thanks to the studies carried out in the last 10 years, cancer has ceased to be a disease that always ends in death. Although the number of cancer cases has increased, there is an unprecedented increase in the number of cancer survivors.
8. Only 5% to 10% of all cancer types are inherited
Many types of cancer develop due to a mixture of heredity and environmental factors such as smoking, alcohol and eating patterns.
9. Breast Cancer is more common in the left breast
The left breast is 5-10% more likely to produce cancer than the right breast. Also, the left side of the body is more prone to melanoma (a type of skin cancer). The reason for this is not yet known.
Lung cancer can be effectively treated with early detection.
