Is Bedroom Light Effective in Women’s Weight Gain?

Ladies, please note: sleeping with the light on or with the TV in your bedroom can cause you to gain weight.

The findings of a new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine reveal that women who sleep with a light or TV light gain weight more easily than women who sleep without light. While the researchers did not prove that sleeping causes weight gain, they do suggest that the two may be linked.

D., a postdoctoral fellow at the U.S. National Research Sciences Triangle Park National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and lead author of the aforementioned study. “Turning off the light while you sleep can be a helpful way to gain weight and reduce the chance of being overweight or obese,” says Yong-Moon Mark Park.

Park said exposure to artificial light at night suppresses the sleep hormone melatonin and can disrupt the natural sleep-wake cycle.

“It can also disrupt daily fluctuations of stress hormones and affect other metabolic processes in ways that contribute to weight gain,” Park said.

Keeping the light on can also result in poor sleep. A nap may prompt you to exercise less and eat more, she said.

For the study, the Park team relied on reported data from nearly 44,000 women ages 35 to 74.

In the study, women who slept with the light on were 17% more likely to gain 11 pounds or more. Park said the level of artificial light is important.

“For example, using a small nightlight was not associated with weight gain, whereas women who slept with a light or TV had an easier time gaining weight,” she said.

While the researchers were responsible for the women’s diet and physical activity, the findings did not change; this suggests that light during sleep may be important in weight gain and obesity.

Conn, director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center in New Haven, Dr. David Katz reviewed the findings. He said the link between exposure to artificial light at night and obesity may not indicate that one causes the other.

“As with any association study, the two findings are true – true, but not directly related,” he said.

“Lack and disorder of sleep is a known risk factor for obesity for a variety of reasons, from mood and restraint to changes in hormonal balance,” she said.

Relying on artificial light at night and obesity are both linked to other factors, such as loneliness, anxiety or some form of social insecurity, Katz said.
