Diabetes causes pancreatic cancer
Pancreatic cancer is a rare type of cancer that needs further research. In order to raise awareness on this issue, 13 November has been designated as “World Pancreatic Cancer Day” since 2014.
Member of Turkish Gastroenterology Association and Head of Internal Medicine Department of Kırıkkale University Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Dilek Oğuz stated that it is possible to get rid of pancreatic cancer, which is one of the most difficult cancers to diagnose at an early stage, with surgical treatment. Protecting ourselves from obesity and diabetes by doing sports will not only protect us from pancreatic cancer but also from other cancers.”
“It is one of the deadliest cancers”
Noting that its position in the body makes the pancreas a sensitive organ, Oğuz noted that the signs and symptoms of pancreatic diseases can easily be confused with the findings of other abdominal diseases.
Explaining that the pancreas secretes digestive secretions, digesting carbohydrates, proteins and fats, it also secretes hormones, including insulin, which has the main role in regulating blood sugar, and stated that the pancreas is called “the most delicate organ of the body” in terms of its functions and location. Emphasizing that pancreatic cancer is among the deadly cancers in the world, Oğuz shared the following information:
“The age at which cancer occurs is generally known as over 50-60 years of age. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most insidious cancers, and when signs and symptoms occur, it is already detected as advanced and spread. So early diagnosis is difficult. Precancerous conditions are not well defined. Screening programs such as colon cancer or breast cancer cannot be performed. Another important feature of the tumor is its ability to spread very rapidly. Due to its location, it spreads rapidly to neighboring organs and to the whole body via blood and lymph. It also does not respond well to chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. Since the risk factors are not very clear, it is not possible to screen the society.”
“Smoking is one of the important factors”
Regarding the factors that cause pancreatic cancer, Oğuz said, “Smoking is accepted as one of the important factors leading to this disease. Although there is not very precise information about nutritional habits, it is accepted that meat and fatty foods increase the risk, and eating fibrous foods such as fruits and vegetables reduces the risk. Obesity is another important risk factor.” made its assessment.
Pointing out that pancreatic cancer is one of the most severe cancers among the known cancer types, whose symptoms are not typical and mostly passed the treatment stage when diagnosed, Oğuz said that the symptoms of the disease are “yellowing and itching in the body, eyes”, “pain spreading in the form of a belt in the back and waist. ”, “anorexia, food intolerance”, “weakness, weight loss” and “sudden onset diabetes (diabetes) disease”.
prof. Dr. Dilek Oğuz stated that the emergence of the disease in many well-known artists in the world and people such as Kamer Genç, who passed away in recent years, started to raise awareness about the disease, and said:
Developed a new treatment method against pancreatic cancer
“Pancreatic cancer is one of the most difficult cancers to diagnose early. If it can be caught rarely, it may be possible to get rid of the disease with surgical treatment. Generally, when it is caught at an advanced stage, treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy are applied to prolong life and relieve the suffering of the patient, even if it is short. In recent years, studies to understand how cancer develops continue all over the world.
